GARY GAZAWAY / EL BUHO
Gary Gazaway is from Northeast Arkansas, where the Western Lowlands of the Central Mississippi Valley join the Ozark Plateau. At an early age, he was influenced by the region's rich musical heritage of blues, soul, gospel, folk, rock, and jazz. He has lived and worked in New York City, Miami , Puerto Rico, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Nashville, and Hawaii, exploring and researching the music and culture from each community. Gazaway has performed or recorded with a long list of diverse Latin and American artists including Israel Lopez (Cachou), The Machito Orchestra, Celia Cruz, Lisette, Flora Purim, Airto, Wagner Tiso, Toninho Horta, OPA, Jaime Roos, Eduardo Mateo, Jaco Pastorius, Jon Hendricks, Ornette Coleman, Robert Palmer, Joe Cocker, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Delbert McClinton, George Jones, Steve Winwood, The Memphis Horns, The Committments, Col. Bruce Hampton, Phish; and on 3 platinum and 7 gold records. His music has been described as Blues-Rock-Latin Jazz, and is a terrific blend of many different styles and influences that create a unique instrumental sound. He plays the trumpet and keyboard with supersonic effects, and leads his band through original songs and modified jazz standards that can be intense and melodic, but contain open sections for free-form improvisation, with modern and traditional dance rhythms layered underneath. Gary Gazaway's group "El Búho Jazz Project" (a nickname fondly bestowed to him in South America and translates as "the owl"), tours in the Southeast, Midwest, Southwest; and has featured many special guests including Victor Wooten, Mike Gordon, Oteil Burbridge, Grant Green Jr., and the increasingly popular Sound Tribe Sector 9.

"El Búho is a jazz fusion group led by the amazing trumpeter Gary Gazaway. The music on his album is a blend of many different styles, all fused into this untouchable sound. The musicianship has got to be some of the best I've ever heard. Though impressive musicianship makes the album an instant favorite, the shear brilliance of the musical arrangements completely overwhelmed my senses. I can't remember ever hearing the trumpet being played like what you hear on his album. I'll never look at the trumpet in the same way again. It just fit so eloquently with the music and the other instruments. This album is pure genius. That's all there is to it." GLOBAL MUSE

"El Búho is one of the most innovative ideas to grace the music world in recent years and leader Gary Gazaway and his group put on a concert that was nothing short of spectacular. They played everything from latin grooves and middle eastern melodies, to classic blues and straight ahead jazz. "  PANORAMA ONLINE

"A Feast of Friends. Hot Stuff!!… El Búho is possibly the most exciting jazz artist I've learned of this year."  KUCR, LOS ANGELES

"If you like jazz, either old-school or new-school, free-floating solos, and a bunch of crazy-legged dancers on the floor, you will dig El Búho's music."  ST. LOUIS RIVERFRONT TIMES

"The Wham Bam Boodle 2000 is funky, horn-laden grooves, laid over bass and percussion, with some great guitar work, mostly recorded live in Javelina Studios in Nashville. Gary Gazaway (El  Búho) wrote all the songs, played horns and keys, and produced this jazz that is as good as it is unique."  NIGHTFLYING
