  • Jr. Teams  (ages 13-18) – A team will consist of 3 or more builders and crew members

 

  • Adult Singles (ages 19 and up)

 

  • Adult Teams (ages 19 and up) – A team will consist of 3 or more builders and crew members

 

  • Parent-Child Team

 

Boats and crews will compete for medals and prizes.  Awards will be given for:

 

·        Best designed boat

 

·        People’s choice

 

·        Most sea worthy boat

 

·        Sea anchor award

 

 

Any person or group interested in being part of the Great Black River Cardboard Boat Race at Pocahontas must fill out and return an entry form. To enter: contact Great Black River Cardboard Boat Race, 452 Lake Drive Pocahontas, Arkansas  72455.  Cost to enter is $10.00 per boat.  THIS EVENT IS TO ENCOURAGE LOCAL SHIP BUILDERS TO TEST THEIR SKILL AGAINST THE ELEMENTS.  Join the fun with your family or group.  Contact W.R. GREAT BLACK RIVER CARDBOARD BOAT RACE
CONSTRUCTION RULES

 

  1. Any thickness of corrugated cardboard may be used.  No waxed cardboard or barrels allowed.
  2. Any type tape (paper, duct, plastic) may be used.  Hulls may not be tape-wrapped or wrapped with any plastic or metal sheeting, etc.
  3. Only standard paints may be used.  Paint should be dry 24 hours before launch.  Seams and edges may be caulked or glued.  (Epoxy, two-part paints or varnishes, fiberglass resin, tar, etc are not allowed.)
  4. Styrofoam and other flotation-type foams are not allowed in, on, or under the boats.
  5. Decorations are allowed and encouraged as long as they do not create a safety hazard.
  6. Wood strips for framing with a maximum weight limit of 5 lbs. may be used.
  7. Paddles or oars may be manufactured or purchased by the contestants.
  8. No motors or sails permitted.
  9. The crew/builder is responsible for disposal or removal of the boat after races.
  10. A boat show will be held shortly before the races.  Boats should be in place by 9:00 a.m. by the tent near the river.
  11. Safety rules must be followed:

a.       All members must wear an approved personal flotation device.

b.      All members in the boat will have their shoulders above the sides of the boat.

c.       No boat will have any area where someone could be trapped.

d.      No sharp edges or metal points may be exposed on the boats.

e.       No additional weights are allowed.

f.        All crews must be registered to enter.

 

 All boats will be inspected for sea worthiness and construction standards before the races start.
